    The Program

    Qingdao University (QDC) is a beautiful University located in a the coastal city of Qingdao.
    The campus covers more than 200 acres, with 16,700 Chinese undergraduate students studying for one of 50 majors within 8 faculties. Also, over 300 international students study here every year

    Program is 4 weeks of studying Chinese Language (4 hrs per day, M-F) as well as engaged in cultural activities and local sightseeing field trips. Students live in the campus dormitory for foreign students – international residence, which is fully furnished and equipped with internet services, phones, air conditioning (central cooling / heat), clean linens, television, and cafeteria canteen.

    Minimum age is 17 yrs. Undergraduates, graduates, high school students, and adults are all welcome to join this program. All students are tested upon arrival check-in orientation, and then placed in the proper level course.

    Early registration is advised, for you will need a Visa to enter China.

    The Location

    Qingdao is a major coastal city, and a very popular tourist destination during the summer months.
    The University is centrally located, and easy to reach by taxi from the airport. Tourist attractions include: Underwater World, May 4th Square, and Zhanqiao Pier. The program includes several local excursions to a variety of sights.

    Courses

    Chinese Language (Mandarin). All levels available (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced).

    All students are tested upon arrival check-in (orientation)….and then placed in the proper level.

    4 hrs per day, M-F of Chinese Language, 20 hrs per week. Morning 8:00 am – 12:00 noon.

    Afternoons and weekends are full of cultural activities and local sightseeing. Schedule provided upon arrival (orientation).

    Instructors are all university trained to teach Chinese as a secondary language.

    Transcript certificate awarded upon completing the courses.

    ELEMENTARY (A,B) Beginner Levels:
    Phonetic training, frequently using vocabulary and sentence patterns covering basic everyday communication skills. Easy sentence structure and grammar. Textbooks: Boya Chinese (Beijing Univ Press) + Developing Chinese (BLCU Press).

    INTERMEDIATE:
    Basic ability to listen and speak, mastering easy sentences. Focus is on building everyday life communication skills. Textbook: Developing Chinese (BLCU Pres)

    ADVANCED:
    Mastering vocabulary of 2000 – 2500, as well as general sentence patterns (key compound).
    Students have a basic Chinese listening and speaking skills….using essential Chinese grammar and vocabulary. Focus is on everyday communication skills.
    Textbooks: Developing Chinese (BLCU Press), + Advanced Chinese (BLCU Press),
    + HSK Testing (BLCU Press).

    BEGINNING

    This course is for the absolute beginner and other beginner students. This course teaches the core characters, pronunciation, basic grammars and structures, as well as learn radicals. Practical daily topics are covered such as: food, time, dates, hobbies, family, weather, money, etc. Students improve communication and express skills, as well as understand more about Chinese culture.

    Objectives:

    • Learn Chinese Pronunciation, up to 21 initials, 38 finals, 4 tones and neutral tone
    • Learn about 150 elementary words, 25 grammar points, and 8 practical patterns
    • Learn about basic Chinese characters, writing orders, strokes, and structures
    • Learn how to talk about various topics of yourself,and express opinion
    • Learn daily tasks such as introducing oneself, greetings, ordering food, etc.
    • Learn to be more accurate and proficient in communicating and expressions
    • Learn about Chinese culture and society, as well as intercultural awareness

    ELEMENTARY

    This course is designed for students who have previous Chinese Language Studies and have mastered the basics. This course teaches more chinese characters, words, and grammars, as well as additional topics in daily life such as: education, sports, seasons, health, travel, work, festivals, transport, games, etc. Overall, improves pronunciation, appropriate expressions, as well as more understandings of Chinese culture (press)

    Objectives:

    • Learn to improve the accuracy of phonetic
    • Learn up to 160 elementary words, 16 grammar points, and 8 practical patterns
    • Learn additional knowledge of Chinese characters – strokes, writing orders, and structures
    • Learn to solve basic problems in daily life, express opinion, and talk about various topics
    • Learn to improve accuracy of Chinese communications and expressions

    Learn to improve understanding of Chinese Culture, and intercultural awareness

    INTERMEDIATE: Low, Intermediate, High (3 separate courses)

    These 3 level intermediate courses are designed to teach students over 1800 common words, an learn complex expressions to talk about abstract topics, and also feel more comfortable in communicating with Chinese people. Comprehensively improving their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills to master the basic communication tasks in real life, as well as more sophisticated communication skills and expression. Talking about a variety of topics such as housing, lifestyle, occupations, travel, and characteristics of a person.

    Objectives:

    • Learn over 850 common words, 140 grammar points, and 80 patterns
    • Learn additional skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing
    • Learn to improve conversation ability on a variety of familiar topics, with accuracy and clarity
    • Learn to solve additional daily tasks, such as expressing suggestions and goodwill
    • Learn additional aspects of Chinese culture and society
    • Learn additional skills of intercultural understanding

    ADVANCED

    This course is designed for advanced students and higher (superior). Students learn more complex and sophisticated communication skills and expressions to easily converse with confidence. Wide variety of topics are covered in this course, such as : modern life, happiness, economic development, traditional culture and modern, etc. Overall, to comprehensively improve the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as more understanding of Chinese culture and today’s society.

    Objectives:

    • Learn an additional 300 common words, 60 grammar points, and 63 practical patterns
    • Learn to improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills
    • Learn and master additional daily tasks, such as interviews, travel planning, appointments, etc
    • Learn about China’s complex economic and political environment
    • Learn additional aspects of Chinese culture and modern society

    Academic Credit

    Students usually earn 3 – 6 credits for the 4 week course. Transcript Certificate issued by Qingdao Tech University upon finishing the program.

    Financial Aid

    Yes, you can use your Financial Aid on this program. Talk to your advisor (aid office) about this.
    Email us the “Consortium Agreement” from your home school. CSA will verify your enrollment, program costs, sign it, and then send back to your home school aid office.

    Activities

    Cultural activities are organized for the afternoons and weekends, as well as local sightseeing to attractions in Qingdao. Some may require a small fee of 200 rmb (approx $35 USD) to help cover the cost of transportation and any entrance fees (parks, museums, etc). Local sights such as “Underwater World”, May 4th Square, and Zhanqiao Pier maybe included. There is also a campus Gym (fitness center, & pool) that you may be able to use (just ask while there).

    Housing

    Students stay in a campus dormitory (international residence).

    Double room: cost approx $250 USD total (4 wks).

    Single room may be available (not guaranteed) and will cost approx double ($475 USD).
    If you want a single room, request one early.

    All students pay housing fees directly there.

    Meals are available in the campus cafeteria (canteen). Cost approx $175 USD (all meals – 4 wks)

    Requirements

    Minimum age is 17 yrs. Open to all students and adults worldwide.
    Must also be in good health to participate.

    Arrival

    Arrive at the Qingdao airport. Can take airport transportation to the Qingdao campus.
    Check-in details provided with your admission docs.

    Airport pick-up is available (by staff there). Before 8:00 pm cost is approx $10 USD.
    After 8:00 pm. pick-up fee will be approx $20 USD. Pay there. Request in advance.
