    PROGRAM

    Nanjing University was founded in 1902 (Sanjiang), has over 29 departments and more than 35,000 students study there every year. It is one of China’s elite Universities under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education. Over 3000 international students attend every year.

    Chinese Language and Culture program is provided each Semester (Fall & Spring), and offers students an intensive program of 4 hrs per day, M-F, together with cultural activities and local field trips. All levels are offered (beginners, intermediate, and advanced). All students take a placement test upon check-in orientation. Students stay in campus housing (fully furnished).

    Minimum age is 18 yrs. Undergraduates, graduates, high school grads, and adults are all welcome to attend. Early registration is advised. A visa is usually required. 17 yrs of age may be possible, but will require a parent consent letter , and the “okay” from the Nanjing staff.

    LOCATION: Nanjing

    Nanjing is one of the major cities in China. Located near the Yangtze River, it served as the capital (Nanking) of six dynasties. Many of the attractions in Nanjing are historical relics of past prestige during the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644). Today, Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu Province, with a population of over 5.4 million. Major industries include: autos, electronic assembly, petroleum, iron and steel, shipbuilding and foodstuff.

    COURSES

    Chinese Language (Mandarin) – 4 levels (beginner, elementary, intermediate, advanced). All students take a placement test upon check-in orientation, and then placed in their proper level. Taught by university trained instructors. In addition, over 20 “optional cultural” courses on Chinese culture are available to intermediate and advanced level students (taught in Chinese). All classes are small group sizes.

    4 hrs per day, M-F, of Chinese Language (Mandarin), 20 hrs per week. Courses cover all areas of learning Chinese – speaking, reading, writing, listening, and HSK preparation. Course descriptions are available from the instructors there.

    Chinese cultural courses are in: Calligraphy, Painting, Poetry, Tai Ji, Ancient Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy, Contemporary Chinese Economy, and Contemporary Foreign Policy.
    Taught in Chinese – for Intermediate and Advanced level students.

    BEGINNING

    This course is for the absolute beginner and other beginner students. This course teaches the core characters, pronunciation, basic grammars and structures, as well as learn radicals. Practical daily topics are covered such as: food, time, dates, hobbies, family, weather, money, etc. Students improve communication and express skills, as well as understand more about Chinese culture.

    Objectives:

    • Learn Chinese Pronunciation, up to 21 initials, 38 finals, 4 tones and neutral tone
    • Learn about 150 elementary words, 25 grammar points, and 8 practical patterns
    • Learn about basic Chinese characters, writing orders, strokes, and structures
    • Learn how to talk about various topics of yourself,and express opinion
    • Learn daily tasks such as introducing oneself, greetings, ordering food, etc.
    • Learn to be more accurate and proficient in communicating and expressions
    • Learn about Chinese culture and society, as well as intercultural awareness

    ELEMENTARY

    This course is designed for students who have previous Chinese Language Studies and have mastered the basics. This course teaches more chinese characters, words, and grammars, as well as additional topics in daily life such as: education, sports, seasons, health, travel, work, festivals, transport, games, etc. Overall, improves pronunciation, appropriate expressions, as well as more understandings of Chinese culture (press)

    Objectives:

    • Learn to improve the accuracy of phonetic
    • Learn up to 160 elementary words, 16 grammar points, and 8 practical patterns
    • Learn additional knowledge of Chinese characters – strokes, writing orders, and structures
    • Learn to solve basic problems in daily life, express opinion, and talk about various topics
    • Learn to improve accuracy of Chinese communications and expressions

    Learn to improve understanding of Chinese Culture, and intercultural awareness

    INTERMEDIATE: Low, Intermediate, High (3 separate courses)

    These 3 level intermediate courses are designed to teach students over 1800 common words, an learn complex expressions to talk about abstract topics, and also feel more comfortable in communicating with Chinese people. Comprehensively improving their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills to master the basic communication tasks in real life, as well as more sophisticated communication skills and expression. Talking about a variety of topics such as housing, lifestyle, occupations, travel, and characteristics of a person.

    Objectives:

    • Learn over 850 common words, 140 grammar points, and 80 patterns
    • Learn additional skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing
    • Learn to improve conversation ability on a variety of familiar topics, with accuracy and clarity
    • Learn to solve additional daily tasks, such as expressing suggestions and goodwill
    • Learn additional aspects of Chinese culture and society
    • Learn additional skills of intercultural understanding

    ADVANCED

    This course is designed for advanced students and higher (superior). Students learn more complex and sophisticated communication skills and expressions to easily converse with confidence. Wide variety of topics are covered in this course, such as : modern life, happiness, economic development, traditional culture and modern, etc. Overall, to comprehensively improve the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as more understanding of Chinese culture and today’s society.

    Objectives:

    • Learn an additional 300 common words, 60 grammar points, and 63 practical patterns
    • Learn to improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills
    • Learn and master additional daily tasks, such as interviews, travel planning, appointments, etc
    • Learn about China’s complex economic and political environment
    • Learn additional aspects of Chinese culture and modern society

    FINANCIAL AID

    Yes, you can use your Financial Aid on this program. Talk to your advisor (aid office) about this. Email us the “Consortium Agreement” from your home school. CSA will verify your enrollment, program costs, sign it and return to your home school aid office.

    ACTIVITIES

    Cultural activities are organized by the staff there. Field trips to local sights around Nanjing are also arranged – historical sights and other attractions. Some excursions may require a small fee for transportation and entrance fees (museums, etc).

    HOUSING

    Students stay in campus housing: international student residence, and campus apartments.

    Double Room: $1000 USD per semester (approx). Single room costs double (approx $2000).
    Pay there upon arrival check-in.

    Off campus housing is also an option if interested, but usually more expensive, and you will need to arrange it yourself. Approx $425 per month for double, and up to $850 per month for single.

    Meals are purchased at the campus cafeteria (canteens). Cost approx $175 USD per month.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum age is 18 yrs. 17 yrs is possible, with parent consent and okay from staff in Nanjing.

    Must also be in good health.

    Nanjing international airport. Can take airport transportation to the Nanjing campus check-in center. Details will be provided with Admission Docs.

    Airport pick-up service may be available. Check with CSA in advance.
    Will cost a small fee of about $25 USD. Paid there.
