Spanish Language & Puerto Rican Culture

The Program

Experience the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico this summer! Study Spanish and Puerto Rican Culture at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan. For 4 weeks, students will enhance their Spanish language ability as well as learn about Puerto Rico. Courses are taught by professors from the University, and the program includes cultural activities and field trips.
Courses
* Spanish for non-native speakers (ESPA 312X)
Course offered at 3 levels: basic, intermediate, and advanced. All students take a placement test. Course is designed to integrate the students cultural experiences, and develop all aspects of the Spanish language: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

the courses.
* NOTE: Courses taught by qualified Professors from the University of Puerto Rico.
Spanish for Non-Native Speakers (3 credits) In five levels: Basic 1, Basic 2, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, and Advanced.University level courses – taught by faculty there. Please note, placement willbe subject to results obtained from placement test given there upon check-in.
Spanish Conversation (1 credit) For beginners and intermediate students. Intensive course in spoken Spanish,designed to give the student fluency in the use of idiomatic, everyday language,as well as comprehensive, practical vocabulary.
Spanish Composition (3 credits) For advanced Spanish students only. This course emphasizes the morpho-syntacticstructures of the Spanish language and their application for composition.Special emphasis is given to the intricacies of Spanish grammar.
Society and Culture in Puerto Rico (3 credits)An overview of island culture that explores its history, arts. folklore, ecology,economics, geography and politics. The course is designed as a series of lecturesand workshops given by experts in each field and integrated with field trips and culturalactivities.
Excursions / Workshops In addition to traditional classroom instruction, weekly field trips, workshops, and culturalactivities are built into the program to enhance learning and to allow students to becomebetter acquainted with some of the most important features of Puerto Rican culture and landscape.Previous summers have included trips to the Puerto Rican Art Museum, the Camuy Caverns,El Yunque Rain Forest, Ponce, Old San Juan, Luquillo Beach, meetings with local authors and artists,bomba and plena music workshops.

Housing
On campus housing is provided for all students. 2 meals daily (breakfast and lunch) are also included in the form of vouchers that are used at on-campus facilities. Bedding linens are provided by campus housing. Cost $440 double room / $550 for single. Meal plan costs $230 (weekdays only).” Housing can be paid directly there upon check-in….or in advance (added to balance). Also, participants can arrange own housing if they prefer.

Arrival/Departure
Plan on arriving May 20th / June 17th and departing June 15th / July 13th. Email us your flight arrival details so we can confirm your airport pick-up (included). Overall, pack light and bring clothes that do well in hot, tropical weather.

Register online. CSA Registration Deposit of $45 USD required to be fully registered. Can pay online by credit card.
