The Program

Fudan University was founded in 1905, and named after a Confucian classic "Shang Shu" written about two thousand years ago. Over the past 80 years, Fudan University has grown into a comprehensive university consisting of 5 branches of learning: the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, technological sciences, and management studies. Fudan has 8 schools, 29 departments, 23 research institutes, and 9 inter department centers. Over 11,000 students attend, and is staffed by more than 2500 teachers. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are awarded.

The Location

Shanghai has a population of 13 million people and is one of China's largest cities, as well as one of China's three municipalities. Shanghai is a flourishing city with rich cultural resources and is an important place to witness the contemporary and changing life of Chinese people. Shanghai is China's largest industrial city as well as the financial, informational, and cultural center of the country. Shanghai is also an important port city, and has the second largest airport in China with over 40 international and domestic air lines. Shanghai is set to become once again the "Wall Street" of the east, as it continues its amazing growth within a "new" China. It's thriving metropolis continues to attract students from all over the world to experience its vitality in helping to change the face of China.

Shanghai has a subtropical maritime climate, four distinct seasons and moderate rainfall. It is warm and rainy in spring, hot and humid during the summer, cool and less rainy in autumn, and cold and dry in winter.

Courses

NOTE: All courses are offered at the 100 - 400 university levels, and taught by qualified faculty. Students take placement exam to determine level.

Learn Mandarin Chinese language: all levels - elementary to advanced: 8 levels. Chinese courses include: Reading and Writing, Listening and Speaking, Composition, Introduction to Modern Chinese.

Reading and Writing: 10 hr/w, from level 1-3. This course concentrates on study for Chinese pinyin, basic sentence patterns and Chinese characters, in order to help acquire a knowledge of Chinese pinyin, basic grammar, and to master the skill of writing Chinese characters, short essays, and to read Chinese.

Listening and Speaking: 9 hr/w, from level 1-3. This course focuses on the Chinese pinyin, simple daily conversation to help students improve skills in speaking and listening. Extensive drills.

Intensive Reading: 8 hr/w, from level 4-8. Students consolidate the grammar and vocabulary from the first 3 textbooks, building up vocabulary, discriminate the meaning and usage of words and expressions, continue to study sentence patterns and grammar, and intensify the training in Chinese reading.

Extensive reading: 2 hr/w, from level 4-8. Intensive training of students in reading, expanding scope of readings, speed, increase vocabulary.

Listening: 4 hr/w, from level 4-6. Establish correct listening habits, master techniques and methods, expand areas of knowledge, build vocabulary, improve listening comprehension through intensive practicing of sentences, paragraphs, conversations, and essays.

Spoken Chinese: 4 hr/w, from level 4-8. Helps students master the techniques of spoken Chinese in a variety of situations. Advance training in colloquial expression.

News Listening and Newspaper Reading: 4 hr/w, from level 7-8. Help students acquire significant proficiency in Chinese newspaper reading and news listening.

Composition: 2 hr/w, from level 4-8. This course concentrates on the study of practical Chinese writing and narration, in order to improve student's ability of expression in writing.

Academic Credit

4 hours of class are taught daily. 20 hours per week. Thus, students usually earn 12 - 16 semester credits for each semester completed. 10 - 13 Quarter credits. Summer Courses: 4 - 8 credits. Upon completing the program, the student will receive (upon request) an official transcript (Certificate) from the University in China.

Financial Aid

Yes, you can use your financial aid on this program. Please have your Financial Aid office fax us a "Consortium Agreement" to complete and sign. CSA Fax # 253-850-0454. CSA does not offer any scholarships or financial aid, we can only assist you in using your home school's financial aid on this program. A faxed copy is acceptable: CSA Fax # 253-850-0454.

The earlier the better, since it takes time to process. Overall, CSA does not offer any financial aid, we can only assist you in obtaining and using your aid from your home school on these programs.

Activities

Staff there may organize visits to: Shanghai sites, Suzhou, Wuxi, Hangzhou, Guilin, Nanjing, Yangzhou, Xian, as well as to Beijing. It often depends on if there is enough interest among the students. It is not guaranteed that any trips will be provided, for it all depends on the staff schedule there. Students often group up and go on local field trips and excursions themselves for it is so easy to do. But if there are any organized trips, participation is optional, and cost extra (paid directly there).

Extra activities may also include: Chinese folk music, Beijing Opera, theatre, acrobatics, painting and calligraphy, and Chinese cooking. These activities are mostly conducted during the summer sessions.

Housing

On campus residence halls and nearby guest hotel are provided. Double rooms only. Students purchase meals at the campus cafeteria, and will cost approximately $140 per month. Rooms are very simple, and most have private bathrooms, TV, telephones, heater and air conditioner. Costs $9 per day for double room, and is added to the balance payment to CSA. Housing payment is required in advance, and added to the CSA program fee balance.

If you prefer to arrange your own housing, that is fine with CSA. Please let us know where you may be staying. All CSA students are allowed to arrange thier own housing if they want. But keep in mind that on-campus housing will be the most convenient.

Fee Includes: full tuition, registration, confirmation, visa documents, housing confirmation in student residence or guest hotel, some cultural activities, access to some campus facilities. Requirements

Program open to all students and adults 18 years of age and older. Passport and Visa required for entering China. Confirmation of enrollment is required for student Visa. CSA will provide JW202 documents (letter of admission) to each applicant, so they can apply for a Visa. Early registration is advised, so you can receive the JW202 documents in time to apply for a Visa at the nearest Chinese Consulate.

Those students staying 4 months or longer, may be required to take a medical exam and aids test in China. This is a routine check on all foreigners staying longer in China. Test will cost a small fee, paid by each student directly there. Any tests taken prior to arrival into China will not be accepted by local authorities. Test must be conducted there in China. Short term summer students are not usually subject to this requirement.

Prior to applying for a Visa, students staying for a Semester or Academic Year may be asked by the Chinese Consulate to complete a "Health Exam" form. This is part of the Visa application requirements for longer term students. Short term summer students usually do not require a medical exam prior to arrival, nor subject to any tests while in China. But keep in mind that the local health authorities in China can change this at anytime.

Overall, you may want to consider obtaining the following vaccinations prior to entering China: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Tetanus (DTP), polio booster, and flu shot. Ask your doctor or medical clinic. Also, please review the "Health related" web-links in the "Resources" section of the CSA website.
