The Program

Study Portuguese language and Brazilian Culture at the prestigious "Fundacao Armando Alvares Penteado" (FAAP) in Sao Paulo, Brazil. University type program, short term of 5 weeks: June 21st - July 23rd, 2010. All students take a placement test and put in the proper level Portuguese course, and there are some Cultural courses taught in English. Located in the residential "District of Higienopolis", nearby neighborhoods include Pacaembu, Perdizes, and Bela Vista where you can find all kinds of local amenities. Housing options include host family, apartments, student hostel, and hotel. Overall, studying at FAAP is a wonderful opportunity to improve your Portuguese, experience the Brazilian Culture, as well as the vibrant city life that Sao Paulo has to offer. The Location

Sao Paulo is the capital of the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. It is the biggest city in the Southern Hemisphere with more than 11 million people living there. When you add the "greater Sao Paulo" area, it is over 19 million. Descendants of many different ethnic groups live in Sao Paulo: Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, African, German, Lebanese, Japanese, Chinese, Jews, and Koreans. Many descendants of other South American countries also live there, such as Bolivia and Argentina. Sao Paulo is the commercial and industrial center of Brazil. Many people consider it the most important city in South America.

Courses

Portuguese Language: Levels - Beginner - Intermediate. All students take a placement test and are placed in the proper level. All students must take a Portuguese language course, plus a choice of electives taught in English - 45 contact hrs each. Class time is 45 minutes each. Attendance required. Transcript issued by Fundacao Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP).

* Portuguese Language 101 (elementary) - 4 credit hours.
Total course hours = 100 (5 week course) Classes from Monday - Friday, from 1:30 - 5:30 pm.
Textbook: Bem-Vindo! A Lingua Portuguesa no Mundo da Comunicacao, 7th edition, SBS publisher.

Elementary Course. Students will learn to introduce themselves, greet people, talk about themselves, talk about their routine, converse with others on daily events, time, report simple facts, make comparisons, go shopping, using units of measurement, communicate in public places like a restaurant, hotel, or airport. They will also learn to write simple text and understand basic predominance of colloquial language.

* Portuguese Language 201 (intermediate) - 4 credit hours.
Total course hours = 100 (5 week course) Classes from Monday - Friday, from 1:30 - 5:30 pm.
Textbook: Bem Vindo! A Lingua Portuguesa no Mundo da Comunicacao, 7th edition, SBS publisher.

Intermediate Course. Students are expected to make assumptions, raise hypotheses, understand and give directions, make reports using the passive voice, talk about the various forms of sports and leisure, talk about health problems and medical specialties. Also, to interpret and comment on literary works, chronicles and journalistic texts with more confidence, as well as understand a great deal of programs on TV, movies, with a predominance of colloquial language.

CLASS ACTIVITIES MAY INCLUDE:

  • texts by renowned authors from Brazilian and Portuguese Literature
  • commercials and excerpts from TV series and radio
  • songs from renowned singers in Brazil
  • magazine and newspaper articles on current affairs
  • Festa Junina - annual Brazilian Festival celebration - beginning of Brazilian winter
  • practice in Brazilian cooking - sponsored by the Catering Undergraduate Course at FAAP
  • videos on most famous Brazilian cities

NOTE: May need to pay for some class materials (small fee paid there).

Culture Courses Taught in English: (45 contact hrs each)

  • Brazilian Culture: Art/Religion/Sociology 303 (3)
    Formation of the Brazilian Culture, The Portuguese Language from Brazil, Regions of Brazil, Brazilian Folklore and Art. Overall, the course reviews these aspects of Brazil.
  • Doing Business in Brazil: Business / Economics 301 (3)
    Legal aspects of doing business in Brazil, tax law, intellectual property law, corporate laws, legal entities, labor regulations, central bank regulations on foreign investment.
    An overview of the Brazilian economy and business practices.
  • Brazil Interdisciplinary Perspectives: Sociology 305 (3)
    A survey or relevant issues and aspects of Brazil and Brazilian communities:
    Brazil in numbers - An Overview: the economy and urbanization, development issues and institutions, cultural and social identities, racism, Brazil culture, art and music, education system, religions in Brazil, social change, social structure and class, public sector and crime, international security, private sector and industrial evolution, the environment and sustainable development.
  • International Business Law: Business 307 (3)
    Study international business law and corporate transactions in a global environment is mostly the comprehension of the classic foundations of international commercial law and its recent development in education of international lawyers for a conscious global business advocacy. Reviews the legal regulation of international business law, transnational corporate and private international law, movement of multinational companies, and international commercial contracts (law).

Academic Credit

Students earn 5 - 7 Semester Credits (depends on courses). Total of 100 course hours during the 5 week term. Culture courses taught in English are 45 hours each. Transcript issued by FAAP.

Financial Aid

Yes, you can use your aid for this program. Please review the Financial Aid information located in the
"Academic Credit" section of CSA website. Obtain a Consortium Agreement from your aid office, and complete it, then e-mail to CSA for review at: studycsa@aol.com.

Activities

Tours to historical places in Sao Paulo may include: Latin America's Memorial, Historical Center of Sao Paulo, Municipal Market, Paulista Museum (also know as Ipiranga or Independence), and the Art Museum of Sao Paulo - MASP. May require a participation fee for entrance fees and transportation. Tours are optional - you can attend or not.

FAAP has a museum (MAB), Theater, Fitness Center, and Library. Internet access is available.

Housing

Host family, student apartment or hostel. Hotels are also available.

CSA will provide you with housing confirmation prior to start date.

Host family is usually a single woman or professional couple (no children). Shared room with another student (or single), in an apartment or house. Usually no internet access in home. Host family's are limited and subject to availability. Meals are not included, but can be arranged with family when there. Rates can vary from $500 - $900 per 5 weeks. Pay housing there upon arrival.

Student Apartment (Hostel): One bedroom, fully furnished, kitchenette, bathroom, with a few hotel type services like laundry, cleaning, internet, cable TV. Nearby the FAPP university. Rates vary from $500 - $1100 for the 5 weeks...depending on type of accommodation and what is included.

Pay housing there upon arrival.

Overall, for meals, plan on spending $400 - $700 per month on food. For lunch, students gather at the campus cafeteria.

Staff in Brazil will arrange for you to stay in a student type accommodation for a couple days upon arrival, so you can see your housing options and decide where you prefer to stay. Host family requests may be able to begin host family stay upon arrival. CSA will provide you with housing confirmations prior to start date.

Requirements

Minimum age is 18 years old. Passport and Visa required. If you do not have a passport, apply for one as soon as possible. You need a passport first in order to apply for a Visa. Apply for a short-term Visa at the nearest Brazilian Embassy (Consulate) as soon as your receive your confirmation documents from CSA.

Check-in 1 -2 days prior the start date. Airport pick-up service available for a small fee. Please request airport pick-up in advance if desired. Also, e-mail flight arrival details.
