The Program

"Firenze" is a city that bustles with industry and craft, commerce and culture, art and science. This conveniently located program gives you opportunity to live the Italian lifestyle, to explore the surrounding areas and to absorb the culture of the city.

The Location

The City of Florence, known as the "Cradle of the Renaissance" has approximately 500,000 inhabitants and is easy to reach by train or car. It offers the visitor artistic and cultural events year-around. The city's position in central Italy allows students to participate in excursions to Venice, Rome, or the seaside. The program is located in the heart of Florence, between the Duomo and the Uffizi Gallery.

Courses

Italian Language:6 levels - beginning, intermediate, advanced. Courses are offered year-around and taught by qualified teachers. All courses are taught in small groups. Courses are held from January - November. Four hours daily, M-F. Minimum 2-weeks. May begin on any Monday.

Other Courses:Art History, Italian Literature, Opera, Business Italian and wine and cooking. Admissions to these courses requires an intermediate level of Italian. Course schedule available during orientation. (extra cost).

Level 1: Basic grammar and sentence structure. Essential vocabulary. Phonetics. Listening comprehension exercises. Conversation. Dictations. This course establishes the basis for a self-assurance conversation leading to independence in essential situations.

Level 2: Development of basic grammar. Vocabulary building. Phonetics. Dictations. Exercises in oral summarizing. Conversation. Elementary readings.

Level 3: Completion of basic grammar and its application. Vocabulary building. Written composition. Readings from contemporary authors (Calvino and Pratolini, for example). In this course, the student reaches a good level of competence and is capable of coping with normal situations in an Italian environment.

Level 4: Syntactic structures and their use. Idiomatic expressions. Written composition. Conversation and discussion. Readings from contemporary authors (Moravia and Montale, for example). Readings from newspapers and magazines. A good level of expression is attained in this course.

Level 5: Special syntactic structures. Synonyms and idiomatic expressions in everydayspeech. Special topics in grammar morphology. Conversation and discussion on current topics. Readings from contemporary authors. Reading and analysis of newspaper and magazine articles. In this course, fluency is attained.

Level 6: Analysis, assimilation and use of more complex structures of the language. Topics of interest to the class. Contemporary readings. This course is the top level (Superior), and aims at general excellence.

Academic Credit

Students earn 3-4 credits for every 4 weeks. Thus, about 1 credit per week. 4 hours of class are taught daily, 20 hours per week.

Financial Aid

Yes, you can use your financial aid on this program. Please have your Financial Aid office e-mail us a "Consortium Agreement" to complete and sign.CSA does not offer any scholarships or financial aid, we can only assist you in using your home school's financial aid on this program.

The earlier the better, since it takes time to process. Overall, CSA does not offer any financial aid, we can only assist you in obtaining and using your aid from your home school on these programs.

Various activities are organized: tours and excursions. Optional, and cost extra (minimum). Details provided upon arrival.

Housing

Italian host families and student apartments are available. Single or double rooms are available with an Italian family. Meals are not included in housing arrangements. Use of kitchen is available. $200 per week, no meals. 2 meals daily (breakfast & dinner) with family cost $160 per week extra.

Student flats are "european style", whereby you have your own room but share the kitchen and bathroom. Locations vary, but staff will try its best to confirm a room nearby the school.

Requirements

Programs are open to all adults. High school students, college students teachers, working adults, professionals, and retired persons are all encouraged to apply. Minimum age is 18. 17 years of age may apply with parental consent.

Entry Requirements
Valid passport required. Visa not required for tourist stay up to 3 months. For longer stays, employment or study, obtain visas in advance. CSA will provide a "letter of admission" which can be used to obtain a student visa.

Arrival
Arrive 1 day prior to starting date (Sunday) to start housing.

Register online. $95 USD registration confirmation deposit required. Please review the "How To Register" section on the CSA website. Payments can be made by money order, cashiers check, or personal check. We will e-mail you a "Confirmation Notice" with additional information shortly after receiving your online registration form.
