The Program

The University of Bourgogne in Dijon is a well respected university. The "Centre International D'Etudes Francaises" offers year-around French language and culture studies for foreign students. Every year, more than 2000 students from around the world come to Dijon to attend. Semester programs, and summer terms are offered. Started in 1985, the program for foreign students has since attracted over 26,000 students.

The Location

The University of Bourgogne is located in Dijon, the capital of the famous Burgundy region. Burgundy is well known worldwide for its 40 million bottles of wine produced every year, as well as its medieval history. Dijon sits at the tip of the Cote d'Or wine region, and boasts a colorful collection of churches, abbeys, museums, and lively sidewalk cafes. In June, Dijon's Ete Musical invites many of the worlds best symphonies. And yes, Dijon is the home of the infamous "Grey Poupon" mustard.

Courses

French Language: all levels - elementary through advanced, 4 levels. Courses offered year-around by the "Semester, or by the Summer "Terms". Also, there is a "preparatory" course prior to the Fall Semester for improvement of French ability before the Semester begins. Courses are 20 hours per week during the semester, and up to 22 hrs. per week during the summer, M-F. All students take a placement test to determine level. (see listing)

Cultural Courses include: French Literature, Philosophy, Theatre, History, History of Art, Music, Economy of France, French Cooking, Modern French Society. Students must be "intermediate" level (Niveau 2) before enrolling in the cultural courses. All courses taught in French.

Beginner Level: Designed for students who wish to acquire a good command of simple syntax and basic vocabulary in one or two semesters. Two courses are offered: one for complete beginners (Debutante 1), the other for students having already acquired elementary notions of the language(Debutante 2). Students at this level may also attend optional courses, but workshops in French Culture, adapted to their level, are available.

French 101, 102 (Elementary French I & II). Courses focus on acquiring solid basics of French language. Emphasis is on listening and speaking, with writing comprehension included as well. Mastering daily situations such as shopping, using public transportation, meeting people are all included in these courses.

Lower Intermediate: This level enables students to master complex syntax and everyday vocabulary. Emphasis is oral practice. Students may attend optional courses in French culture adapted to their level.

French 201, 202 (Lower and Upper Elementary)

Upper Intermediate: Designed for students who have adequate command of written and oral French. Emphasis on improving communication skills.

Advanced: Focuses on complex structures of written and oral French. Current events are used as basic course materials.

French 301, 401 (Advanced and Superior Level)

Higher: Teaching at this level takes place during the 2nd semester only. This course is designed for students who wish to specialize in the French Language, and is based on complex texts dealing with human sciences, literature, etc. Course aims to develop the expression of abstract ideas in a foreign language. In addition to language classes, optional courses in French Culture, students are required to attend two tutorials at the Faculte des Lettres with French Students.

NOTE: All courses are university level and taught by qualified faculty. Upon completing the term, CSA students receive a transcript from the University. Course description details can be obtained from the instructor upon starting the class

Examinations: Examinations for Beginners and Lower Intermediate give students access to a higher level. Upper Intermediate, Advanced and Higher prepare students for the "Certificat Pratique de Langue Francaise" (1st Grade), the Diplome d'Etudes Francaises (2nd Grade), and the Diplome Superieur d'Etudes Francaises (3rd Grade).

Academic Credit

Students earn 12-15 semester credits for each semester. 4 hours of class per day, 20 hours per week. 3-4 credits per month are earned for the Summer sessions.

Financial Aid

Yes, you can use your financial aid on this program. Please have your Financial Aid office fax us a "Consortium Agreement" to complete and sign. CSA Fax # 253-850-0454. CSA does not offer any scholarships or financial aid, we can only assist you in using your home school's financial aid on this program. A faxed copy is acceptable: CSA Fax # 253-850-0454.

The earlier the better, since it takes time to process. Overall, CSA does not offer any financial aid, we can only assist you in obtaining and using your aid from your home school on these programs.

Activities

Students may participate with French students in university club activities: drama, choral, orchestra, photography, film, etc. May join numerous sports activities. Invitations from local French families.

Excursions: Several excursions are arranged by the school: (Burgundy, Paris, Versailles, Provence, etc.) (Cost extra: $10 - $300 depending on destination)

Housing

University residence hall - Foyer International D'Etudiants. Double or Single room. Has TV rooms, laundry, a kitchen, and a cafeteria. CSA will send confirmation of housing arrangements before departure. Costs approximately $700 per month for single room. Meals are not included in program price, but can be purchased in cafeteria at approx. $250 per month. Three meals may cost up to $300 per month depending on meal plan, and where one goes. Some meals can be prepared in the residence hall kitchen. Students can either choose half board (two meals daily), or pay for their meals separately. Damage deposit of $150 required upon dorm check-in - refundable.

Cooking facilities are available on each floor of the residence hall. Full Meals: (including hors-d'oeurve, meat or fish, vegetables, cheese, dessert). Approx. $7 per day to eat at the cafeteria ($200 per month). Snacks at all times / 24-hour vending machines. Bed linen is provided. Bring your own towels.

Housing with French Family also available - cost $900 - $1100 per month - includes 2 meals and single room in French home near school.

Fee Includes: tuition, registration, visa documents, orientation, housing confirmation in university residence hall or host family, textbooks, campus facilities, extra activities. Housing cost not included. Housing is extra - see housing section.

Requirements

Programs are open to all adults. High school students, college students, teachers, working adults, professionals, and retired persons are all encouraged to apply. All beginners (debutants) must enroll in the "Niveau 1" (elementary course). All students will be given a placement test upon arrival to determine French ability. Minimum age is 18.

Passport and visa required for programs longer than three months. "Letter of enrollment" will be provided by CSA...which is needed to obtain a Visa. After arrival into Dijon, students will also be required to obtain a "residence permit". Students should bring 4-6 extra passport size photos for the residency permit. Campus Director will inform students where to go in Dijon to obtain the permit...(part of orientation). www.french-embassy.com

Students are advised to arrive on the Sunday before each session (starting date). Students will be met by members of the school staff in Dijon. at the Dijon train station from 8:30am - 12:30pm, and 2:00pm - 7:00pm. Students are escorted to the school, as well as the student residence. Students arriving on other dates, may take a taxi or bus. Students will be informed by CSA prior to departure as to how to get to Dijon as well as to the school.
